10 Best Farm Stays in Ontario for Animal Lovers
Ever since my weeks-long visits to Scotland, I’d missed waking up to the sight of fuzzy highland cows.
Thankfully, Ontario has a genuinely great farm stays scene, and you do not need to know how to muck a stall to enjoy any of it, though a few of these hosts will happily teach you if you want.
I went through the province and pulled ten real animal experience stays, from off grid stargazing cabins tucked between goat pastures to a barn loft where Highland cows wander right up to your door.
There’s an Airbnb here for every version of a weekend away.
1. Wide Open Spaces Farm Stay, Cambridge
This is the farm stay for people who want the whole experience without giving up their queen bed. The room is freshly renovated with space for up to three, a single bed tucks in nicely for a kid or a third adult who does not mind getting cozy, and there is a kitchenette for mornings you would rather not head into town.
The real draw is outside: a private porch with a swinging bench, a firepit ringed in lanterns for the kind of evening that photographs well without you trying, and full run of three acres including the animals.
Worth knowing before you book: this is a lived in family farm, not a private retreat. The owners run it with their four homeschooled kids, who are often around the property. Cambridge also puts you close enough to African Lion Safari that you might hear the roars from your porch, plus the Butterfly Conservatory and a couple of golf courses nearby.
2. Animal Lovers Dream Barn Loft, Burlington
The loft is a proper 350 square foot apartment, not a glorified shed. It has its own kitchen, a separate bedroom, and a three piece bathroom with a shower, tucked above a working barn housing chickens, ducks, geese, pigs, goats, horses, and a small herd of Highland cows.
The animals here are genuinely friendly and will wander right up to you, which is the whole point, but this is not a petting zoo with the rules softened for tourists. You are asked to stay out of the gated pasture since some animals bite or kick strangers, skip picking up or chasing anyone, and keep the apartment door shut so flies and wildlife do not let themselves in.
Pack boots for muddy mornings and leave the candles at home, since the whole structure is wood and full of hay. There are also a few barn cats living their best feral life in the lower barn, adorable from a distance but not invited inside. For all of these reasons, this one suits teens and adults better than young kids, with a stated minimum age of 12, and pets are a hard no since dogs stress out the resident animals.
3. Bunkie on the Farm, Bowmanville
This is glamping in the literal sense: a tiny 10 by 10 bunkie with a double bed, an electric heater and heated mattress for the shoulder seasons, and a covered outdoor kitchen and lounge that handles the actual cooking. There is no shower, a composting outhouse covers the basics, so this suits people who are fine roughing it a little in exchange for waking up next to llamas and alpacas on 15 acres.
Bowmanville Creek runs through the property with trout fishing in spring and salmon in fall, and a forest trail gets you there.
One rule that matters: leave every gate exactly as you found it. Goats are escape artists and the farm means it. Worth checking before you book, this is a working farm that also runs scheduled events for up to 20 people on some weekends, so if total quiet is the goal, ask about the calendar first.
4. West Wind, Brant
West Wind’s biggest selling point might be geography. Five minutes to Brantford, seven to Paris, twenty to Cambridge, so you are never far from an actual meal if farm life gets to be too much. The apartment itself is a bright, fully self contained 1100 square feet surrounded by gardens, more space than most farm stays on this list offer.
Alpacas and horses graze just outside, and while you cannot wander into their paddocks solo, the hosts will arrange a supervised visit and make time for photos.
Evenings by the firepit come with a bonus: moonflowers that actually bloom as the sun goes down, which sounds like a marketing line until you see it happen. From here you are also close to rafting and kayaking on the Grand River in Paris, plus hiking along the Niagara Escarpment.
5. Haute Goat Farm Alpaca Cabin, Port Hope
This is the most immersive stay on the list in the most literal sense. Your bunkie sits inside the paddock itself, so Shaun the sheep and a small herd of alpacas are your actual neighbours for the night.
The alpacas take a bit of patience to win over since they run shy and sensitive, but Shaun and the other Babydoll sheep will happily walk up for a face rub, which the listing accurately warns can turn into extra guests trying to get into your bunkie.
Washrooms and a fridge are a 200 yard walk away rather than in the bunkie itself, so this one rewards people who do not mind a short trip in the dark. The on site café is seasonal, so check ahead. When it is open you can order breakfast there, and when it is not, a bento box shows up instead. Given the size of some of these animals and how much patience they require, it is a better fit for kids eight and up than toddlers.
6. Capella Cabin at Barking Goat Farms, Newburgh
Capella is built for stargazers first, farm animals second, though you get both. The covered deck with a sit up bar and firepit faces genuinely dark sky, since you are roughly halfway between Toronto and Ottawa and away from most light pollution, and the off grid setup means no electricity to distract you from looking up.
Goats and donkeys are a short walk away at the main farm, plus a hundred acres of trails if you want to explore beyond your own private field.
There is an outdoor bathroom with a compost toilet and a seasonal gravity fed shower, so pack accordingly. The farm also runs a second, more secluded cabin called Escape Goat Hideaway if this one is booked.
7. Escape Goat Hideaway at Barking Goat Farms, Newburgh
The sister cabin to Capella, Escape Goat Hideaway leans slightly more romantic with its screened in porch, a nice spot for morning coffee before the day gets going. It is tucked into its own private hay field with a separate entrance, so despite sharing a farm with Capella, you will not run into other guests.
In winter there is a natural skating rink near the cabin when conditions allow, and year round there is a complimentary meet and greet with the resident goats and donkeys.
Between the privacy and the porch, this is the pick on this list for a couples trip or a low key weekend with friends rather than a family outing.
8. The Highland Bunkie, Powassan
The Highland Bunkie earns its name honestly. Scottish Highland cows graze the pasture right outside, and your stay includes a genuinely valuable perk, a free guided tour normally worth $50 where you meet every animal on the 15 acre hobby farm.
The bunkie itself is fully insulated and heated, which matters here since Powassan gets properly cold, and the loft bed looks straight out over the pasture.
The bathroom situation is worth knowing upfront. It is a heated outhouse a short walk away with a flush toilet and sink but no shower, so this leans more rustic than some of the fully appointed suites on this list. What you get in return is real northern Ontario scenery, a shot at the northern lights on a clear night, and a backyard that borders a snowmobile trail. Wildlife sightings here go well beyond the farm animals too, so do not be surprised by deer, fox, or even the occasional black bear at a distance.
9. PigStay, Trent Hills
At PigStay, you are sleeping in a barn stall next to rescued pigs, full stop, and the listing is upfront that this is not a luxury experience so much as an honest one. What you get is two comfortable beds, cozy linens, and neighbours who greet you with snorts instead of small talk. Roosters handle the wake up call, no snooze button available.
Beyond the pig stall, guests can use the pool, wander a wooded trail, and generally roam the sanctuary at their own pace, with the host happy to chat about the animals if you are curious. One small logistics note: you will need a profile photo and at least one review on your account before booking, which the host uses to keep things safe for the animals and the property.
10. Luxury Suite with Indoor Pool, Alpacas and Babydoll Sheep, Ridgetown
If everything else on this list sounds a little too rustic, this is the corrective. The suite is a genuinely spacious basement apartment with its own entrance, full pool access, an outdoor sauna, and manicured grounds, all while alpacas and Old English Southdown Babydoll sheep graze nearby rather than share your living space.
It is a good pick if you want the farm scenery without giving up creature comforts, or if you are travelling with people who are lukewarm on animals but into a country pool day.
Next door, 75 acres of Crown land add proper hiking and birdwatching if you want to stretch your legs beyond the property. One thing to flag for privacy conscious guests: there are security cameras outside and in the pool room, which the host notes upfront for safety.
