Where to Get Free Audiobooks (Without the Library Wait or Amazon Audible)
There are approximately a million reasons someone ends up looking for audiobooks outside of their usual routine. Maybe Audible isn’t your thing, maybe the library hold list has you in audiobook purgatory, maybe you’ve just hit a wall with music and podcasts and need something different.
If any of that sounds familiar, here’s what I’ve been telling people: Audiobooks.com.
3 Free Audiobooks
Right now, new listeners get a 30-day free trial with 3 free audiobooks included, yours to keep, no strings.
The library you’d be getting access to during that trial is genuinely massive with over 700,000 audiobooks across pretty much every genre you can think of.
There’s also a free audiobook section within the library so even outside of your trial credits, there’s a lot to explore without spending anything.
What you can actually listen to
The category list is solid. Whether you’re in a thriller phase, a self-improvement era, or you just want someone to read you fantasy novels while you do the dishes:
- Mystery, Thriller & Horror
- Romance
- Science Fiction & Fantasy
- Biography & Memoir
- Self-Development
- Fiction and Non-Fiction
- Business & Economics
- History
- Health & Wellness
- Teen & YA and Kids
- In TV & Film
- Learn Something New
And more
There’s also a Books with Buzz section and regular discounted audiobooks if you stick around past your trial.
What’s coming up
If you want to use one of your free credits on a pre-order, there are some solid ones in the pipeline right now:
- It Could Have Been Her by Lisa Jewell
- Chess Not Checkers by Annah Conwell
- Galinda: A Charmed Childhood by Gregory Maguire (yes, Wicked universe)
- The Romance Revival by Christina Lauren
The Galinda one alone might be worth signing up for if you were a Wicked kid or are a Wicked adult. I for one can’t say no to new Lisa Jewell.
Why not just use Audible?
Genuinely no reason you have to. Audible is the default recommendation because Amazon has excellent marketing, not because it’s objectively the best option.
Audiobooks.com has a comparable library, a competitive price point, and it’s not attached to a company you might have complicated feelings about.
If the library is your usual move, I also relate, but I’m also reminded all the time that hold lists for popular titles can stretch for months.
Three free audiobooks, available today, is a pretty good argument for trying something new.
