Pokopia for Animal Crossing Fans: How the Two Cozy Games Compare
Like many, I spent a large number of hours on Animal Crossing: New Horizons during and after the panorama. It was exactly what that extended moment of isolation called for. Slow, gentle, no pressure, just me and my little island and the soothing sound of bells.
So when the recently released Pokopia for Nintendo Switch 2 started getting compared to ACNH everywhere I looked, my eyes perked up fast.
I’ve been itching to get my hands on it ever since and wanted to browse further what Pokopia does “better” than Animal Crossing.
Now, I definitely think Pokopia might just be the cozy gaming glow-up a lot of us have been quietly hoping for. Here’s why.
Please note, these comparisons come from a place of love and affection for both games, not competition.
The Pokopia World Feels Enormous
Where ACNH gives you one island, Pokopia offers multiple different areas and a single area can feel around ten times the size of an ACNH island. That’s a lot of ground to cover.
For those who always felt a little cramped on their ACNH island wishing they had more room to build and roam, this sounds like a significant upgrade.
Alternatively, having both games can also work as you could use your island as a vacation from the Pokemon world.
A Proper Story and Quest Structure
While Animal Crossing is known for being low stakes, low in story and slower in gameplay pace, some found it a little hollow to play over time, especially as we got out of slow, lagging lockdown mode.
Pokopia, by contrast, apparently comes with a full quest line and structured progression. It gives you the sense you’re working toward something with a foundation and architecture full of story, missions and proof of progression to back it up.
Compared to ACNH, you’re not limited in how much you can accomplish in a gaming day, allowing you to progress as freely as you feel without time or character clocks making you wait for something to be complete.
Villagers That Actually Do Things
In Animal Crossing, the villagers are adorable, but are mostly decorative if we’re honest. They wander around, say charming things, and occasionally give you a gift.
In Pokopia, your Pokémon companions have functional roles, as would be expected by how we all likely dream of living in a Pokeworld.
The pokemon you uncover will be able to help with tasks, use the things you place in their environment, and can even accompany you as you explore. This makes the world feel much more alive.
Tools Don’t Break!
If you’ve ever had your shovel snap at an inconvenient moment in ACNH, you understand why this is worth celebrating.
A Rotating Camera
Being able to rotate the camera in a building and decorating game is a reasonable ask. Pokopia has it. ACNH, famously, does not.
No Tom Nook
Enough said, lol. Sorry, Tom.
One Last Love Note to My Island
My ACNH island will always have a place in my heart but I also know that I’ve been waiting for something that builds on that feeling and from everything I’ve read, Pokopia will be exactly it.
